@ Katie Kaplin(and ANYONE with her point of view!)- It would seem that this REDICULOUS ad campaign is more directed at people with YOUR mindset, than African-Americans who actually know better!
Let’s start with Dr. King being a….”Republican”! In case you didn’t know…which I seriously doubt…back in Dr. King’s day, the Democratic party in the South, where the MAJORITY of African-Americans still lived prior to those great migrations North, was made up of whites who were VERY closely aligned with anti-civil rights attitudes…putting it MILDLY!!
The “States’ Rights Democratic Party”(usually called the Dixiecrats) originated as a breakaway faction of the Democratic Party in 1948, determined to protect what they portrayed as the southern way of life beset by an oppressive federal government(SOUND FAMILIAR??!!) and supporters assumed control of the state Democratic parties in part or in full in several Southern states. The States’ Rights Democratic Party opposed racial integration and wanted to retain Jim Crow laws and white supremacy in the face of possible federal intervention.
So……as COMMOM SENSE would dictate, if you were African American and lived in the South….what political party would YOU join??!! Needless to say, once LBJ, a Southern Democrat, signed the Civil Rights Act, Dixiecrats defected EN-MASS to the Republican Party, to the chegrin of MANY Northern Republicans, and established the bastion of intolerance and misinformation that they represent today! As a result, African Americans also defected en mass to the Democratic Party, once the stain of the former Dixiecrats appeared on the Republican ticket.
So, it REALLY pays to know your history…..or at least ACKNOWLEDGE it! What you might also find helpful is acually KNOWING an African American or two well enough to have a genuine conversation about race and/or polictics…..something I’ve notice MANY whites in this country are VERY afraid of!
And in case you haven’t noticed….in SPITE of generations of racist obstacles, WE African Americans have managed to ascend to the highest levels of Corporate, Military AND Political Leadership in this country….just because the ONLY African Americans YOU seem to “know” are the ones you see from a distance on the “other side” of wherever YOU live, it doesn’t mean that ALL African Americans in this country are looking for the Government to “do it for them”. For every African American family you’re referring to, there are no less than five WHITE families in the same or even WORSE conditions of dependency in THIS country….have you been to lower Appalachia lately??! Some of it looks like a third-world country….AND THEY’RE PREDOMINANTLY REPUBLICAN!!!! LOL!!!!

@Katie–this is not AWESOME. It’s disgusting and an insult on the intelligence of blacks. There’s nothing wrong with being a conservative, but the 2011 GOP is trashy and hateful. In fact, anyone who is not in the top 1% of Americas wealthiest should never vote for the Republicans because their policies are not in the best of interest of anyone–black, white, brown, etc–who’s not in this income bracket. They use poor and middle-class whites to carry out their dirty work and now it looks like they have a few black folks in their pockets too.
Please consider the following:
By definition Racism is the opinion that someone is inferior or superior as a person because of their ethnicity. Bigotry by definition, is the posture that others are wrong without substantiation or deliberative thought processes. On a practical level, bigotry often includes the elements of racism- based on some other criteria. Both dynamics are rooted in intolerance and in hatred. When that hatred is especially vehement, it can, and is sometimes accompanied by violence. When these dynamics become organized to a degree that they develop leaders and education forums: they cease to be independent prejudices and become a movement- much like the Facist movement in early twentieth century Germany.
The time has come for black voters to think for themselves, repudiate the racism, the denigration and the perception that you cannot survive without the Democrats who’ve played you like Nero played his fiddle. It’s time to acknowledge that you have more in common with those who don’t belittle your belief in God, diminish your common sense, or your desire to see your children do a little better- just like every other American. It’s time you refused to continue to live on the plantation where you eat the scraps from the masters table; it’s time you stopped seeing yourself as different from “those people” and joined the American mainstream. The America that offers you more opportunity to become whatever you want to become is waiting for you with wide open arms.
