No one will stone, imprison or beat you here YET. If the conservatives have their way they would return us to "biblical" laws. Well, since we have a constitution which strictly forbids it it will never happen but many conservatives want it. If you read the bible there are instructions for us to stone a woman to death if she is not a virgin on her wedding day so for those who want to impose Christianity as a rule here what is the difference between that and Sharia law? We have a secular government here and that's a good thing. You're free to believe and worship any way you want and I'm free to not believe or not worship. Everyone is happy right?

With so much controversy, you must be on to something. I believe Raging Elephants is bringing all kinds of voices together. Knowledge of history is one of the keys to making informed decisions for the future. The problem here is who is writing the history you are reading? Each group has an agenda. Recently it has been widely publicized that our history books are being changed; things added, twisted, left out or misleading information. The key I believe is to research the writer of the information you are ingesting. If you feel the writer is a person on the same path you wish to follow and has written credible work previously, I would read it twice. Also I feel Raging Elephants stand for decency, family values, and a strong christian foundation. Some are trying to stamp this out of the U.S. We need to come together NOW while we are still free. I am fortunate to be a woman born in a country, that will let all of us say how we feel. No one will stone, imprison, or beat me here.

Jaye you are partially correct but also incorrect. Those who voted for the CRA were northern Dems and Repubs while the elected representatives in the south from both parties did not vote for it. The sad fact is that the GOP used this vote to lure southern whites to the Republican party due to their opposition to this law. LBJ said that the Dems would lose the south for a generation because he signed this law, what do you think he meant by this? Also, for whom did Dr. King support in the 1964 presidential election? Why did southern whites leave the Democratic party en-mass after the 1964 CRA? If you answer these questions you will have a clue as to why most Black people in this country do not support the GOP. If you are going to study history you have to study all of it or you will be lost on the nuance. Do a bit of research and you'll see why your statement is only partially correct. If this was a college course you'd get an incomplete.

Not true Jaye. The northern Dems and GOP voted for the civil rights act while southern Dems and GOP members did not. What you're leaving out is that the Republicans used this vote to steer racist whites into the Peublican party. Google LBJ's comments after he signed this landmark legislation, he basically said the Democrats would lose the south for a generation and he was right to a certain extent. The Democrats lost a generation of white southern voters. This is the biggest reason Black people are not Republicans, the GOP cynically used the CRA to gain southern white support at the expense of Black voters. Look up the "southern strategy" to get more information about this. If we are going to talk about these matters we need to be telling the truth and the truth is Dr. King was not a Republican. For more evidence of this call the King Research Center at Stanford University to learn more about this. There was also an interview with the man himself on WVON in Chicago in which he stated he was non-partisan so he could affect both parties. For Dr. King to be a Republican means he was a liar about his party affiliation. As his fraternity brother and huge fan I tend to believe he was not a liar but some are trying to use his image for cynical purposes. Sad.

seems like the above comments are going back and forth. All I know is the Republicans voted in favor of Civil Rights while Dems didn't. I don't know what party MLK was a part of. But I do believe that he wanted what was right. For people to be seen for the color of their heart (character) and not the color of their skin.

Apostle Claver,

Do you have any T-shirts available for sale with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., billboard information?

Several friends and I would like to purchase this kind of T-shirt to wear to work.

Keep up the good work.

It may be misleading, but if it gets a few people to stop and think, maybe some good can come of it.

He WAS a Republican, but we can blame LBJ for leading him astray. The Kennedy/Johnson administration was the begining of the Democrats recognizing the power that their social liberalism could wield through the black community. LBJ told MLK what he wanted to hear and the dems have been tickling the ears of the blacks ever since.

Isn't it amazing how quickly the blacks forgot that the dems were the ones fighing the civil rights acts put forth by the GOP all the way through 1960, and by 1964 the jackasses were the champions of the movement!

I am not familiar with this claim (MLK as a Republican). I assume it must refer to once entrenched voting patterns of African-Americans for the party of Abe Lincoln? If so, you need to get THAT message out first, otherwise this one puts you at risk of some unwelcome backfire.
